AmberWave Systems to Support FIRST Robotics Competition Through Sponsorship of Pinkerton Academy Robotics Team
Salem, N.H. - December 17, 2008 - AmberWave Systems is supporting the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) through the sponsorship of Pinkerton's Academy robotics team, known as Team 241. Pinkerton Academy is located in Derry, N.H. and each year, its high school students compete in the FRC robotics competition.
AmberWave Systems is a 2008-2009 sponsor of Team 241, who began participating in the FRC competitions in 1993.The team meets throughout the year, including the summer months, in order to gain the necessary funds needed to run a robotics team and also to educate new recruits, the community and others about robotics.
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a unique, varsity sport-of-the-mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be.
The FRC challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions designed by a committee of engineers and other professionals.
Team 241 will receive their "challenge" on January 3, 2009, and immediately begin building their robot for their first competition on February 26-27 in Manchester, N.H. The second competition takes place a month later in Hartford, Conn., and if successful, the team goes on to Atlanta for the national competition. Team 241 is a multi-award winning team and has twice competed at the national level.
FIRST redefines winning for these students because they are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.
